Heroes of 9/11

If you would ask a hundred people what their definition of a “hero” is, you would most assuredly receive dozens of different answers. Some may say a hero is a person who accomplishes something great, such as a star athlete or entertainer. Others will say a hero is a person who has overcome a great amount of adversity to become successful in life. The list could go on forever. However, most of us could probably agree that the greatest heroes are the everyday, ordinary people who are willing to lay down their life for the safety of others.

Unfortunately, we often only see this type of hero during times of great tragedy. On 9/11/2001, thousands of emergency personnel, police officers, and firefighters risked their lives to save others. Some lived through the 9/11 Attacks, hundreds of others did not. For the 15th anniversary of this unforgettable event, the Junior and Senior students in Mr. Lykins’ Current Events class chose to highlight just a handful of heroic actions that occurred on that day.

I would like to thank all of the wonderful, thoughtful students who helped to make this respectful and moving tribute to all who risked or gave their lives in the service of their fellow citizens.
