Greenco Hike

On Friday, October 17th, sixth and seventh grade students from Dawson-Bryant Middle School travelled to Greenbo Lake State Resort Park near Greenup, Kentucky for an adventure they are sure not to soon forget! In addition to hiking through the lakeside hills and trails for over five miles, students got up close and personal with many environmental issues in addition to local history. Lead by Greenbo guides and naturalists, students learned about a variety of plant and animal species indigenous to the region. Students learned about the habitat and behaviors of the pileated woodpecker, black bears that are native to the park, as well as a variety of other small mammals, deer, snakes and amphibians. Students toured the Buffalo one-room school house and heard a first hand account by the granddaughter of Buffalo School’s first teacher. Students also learned about the once popular iron-ore industry and posed for a picture in front of the Buffalo-Clay-lick Iron Furnace. While on the hike, students also observed the remains of a historical pioneer cemetery not often seen by the public.
